Ten Hag was considered to be one of the best tacticians in world football following his success at AFC Ajax and FC Twente before making the switch to England. He signed a three-year contract with the option to extend by a further year.

Ten Hag became the fifth permanent manager United has appointed since Ferguson left the job at the end of the 2012/13 season.

Sir Alex Ferguson said that he hopes Ten Hag will do well as the manager of the Red Devils and further added that Manchester United need someone to get in control of the situation.

Phelan is not buying injuries as an excuse, adding: “Lots of examples of players being unavailable but it’s Manchester United at the end of the day, you get on with it, you set your stall out, and I think that’s come up a bit short.”

It appears that not everyone at Ineos share Ten Hag’s confidence. An end-of-season review is taking place this week.
