Man United Legend Aims at Possible Return Amid Dan Ashworth Exit

Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar is reportedly eyeing a potential return to the club amid the sudden exit of sporting director Dan Ashworth.

Ashworth’s departure, announced on December 8, came as a shock after only five months in the role.

Van der Sar, who had a successful stint as the club’s goalkeeper, has been linked to a potential return to Old Trafford to fill the vacant sporting director position.

This development comes after Ashworth’s exit, which has raised questions about the club’s leadership and decision-making processes.

Ashworth’s departure was reportedly due to differences in opinion on the club’s football structure, as well as a clash of personalities with other key figures, including CEO Omar Berrada and Sir Dave Brailsford.

In an interview with Sky Sports, he said he’s far from done in football and is waiting for a challenge that entices him.

He said: “No, no, I don’t think [I’m finished in football]. I enjoy the game and I think what I achieved in 11 years, first as a marketing director and then as a chief executive, I’m sure there’s gonna be a challenge somewhere or a possibility.

“The attraction of the football world, smelling success of working on a winning team to achieve something…I think that will be a pull at a certain point in my career.”

The exact reasons behind Ashworth’s exit are still unclear, but it’s evident that his departure has created a power vacuum that Van der Sar could potentially fill.
