Grimsby Faces Another Heavy Fine Amid Conspiracy againstMan United
Grimsby Town have been fined £20,000 by the English Football League (EFL) after fielding an ineligible player during their Carabao Cup victory over Manchester United.

The League Two side’s triumph, a dramatic 12-11 penalty shootout win following a 2-2 draw, will stand, as the EFL’s Board of Directors determined that a financial penalty was the appropriate sanction, citing past precedent for such a breach in the competition.
The incident relates to Grimsby’s registration of player Clarke Oduor, which was submitted just one minute after the 12:00 pm deadline on the day before the Round Two tie. The club self-reported the error upon discovering the issue the following day.
In a statement, the EFL noted that the club’s non-compliance was “not deliberate with no intention to deceive or mislead.” The £20,000 fine includes a suspended amount of £10,000, which will be triggered if Grimsby commits a similar offense in any EFL competition before the end of the 2025/26 season.
The decision ensures that Grimsby Town will progress to the Third Round of the competition, while Manchester United’s run in the cup comes to an end.
The ruling has drawn comparisons to similar cases, including Liverpool’s in 2019, where they were also fined for a technicality rather than being thrown out of the cup.
