Man United Executive Rejects Arsenal

Christopher Vivell, Manchester United’s newly appointed director of recruitment, was once a prime target for Arsenal’s sporting director role.

According to reports, the Gunners included Vivell on their early shortlist to revamp their football operations.

However, Arsenal ultimately opted for Atletico Madrid’s Andrea Berta after Vivell rejected the approach, leaving United free to secure Vivell’s services permanently.

Graeme Bailey, a trusted insider, revealed: “He was on Arsenal’s early list, but they’ve obviously gone with Andrea Berta now. Manchester United have tied him down”.

Vivell joined United in July 2024 on an interim basis, tasked with overhauling a recruitment system plagued by financial waste and poor decisions.

His impact was immediate. Under his guidance, United prioritized cost-effective, high-potential signings like 18-year-old Malian midfielder Sekou Kone and Argentine prospect Diego Leon, both seen as emblematic of INEOS’s youth-focused strategy .

These moves, along with a shift toward younger first-team targets (e.g., 18-year-old Leny Yoro and 23-year-old Joshua Zirkzee), convinced the club to offer Vivell a multi-year contract earlier this year .

Notably, Vivell accepted a reduced salary to align with INEOS’s austerity measures, signaling his commitment to the rebuild .

His permanent appointment formalizes his role in leading global recruitment, scouting networks, and emerging talent development, reporting directly to technical director Jason Wilcox .

A Track Record of Talent Identification

Vivell’s reputation stems from his work at RB Leipzig and Chelsea, where he played a key role in identifying stars like Erling Haaland, Josko Gvardiol, and Dominik Szoboszlai .

At United, his philosophy aligns with INEOS’s mandate to avoid past mistakes—such as the £85 million flop Antony—by targeting undervalued, technically gifted players ready to contribute immediately .

This summer, Vivell faces his biggest test yet. With United languishing in 13th place and financial constraints tightening, his ability to secure hidden gems will be critical.

Links to Argentinian defender Juan Gimenez and Sunderland’s Chris Rigg suggest a continued emphasis on youth and value .
