Man United Handed Major Transfer Boost For Academy Graduate

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing-up a move to re-sign their former academy starlet Angel Gomes next summer.
Gomes, 24, came through the ranks at United and became the club’s fourth-youngest player of all-time when he made his debut aged 16 years and 263 days in a Premier League game against Crystal Palace in May 2017.Â
However, Gomes, who joined United at the age of six, struggled to kick on over the next three years, making just 10 appearances in all competitions before he was released in the summer of 2020.
Gomes moved to Lille on a five-year deal and has impressed, with the midfielder breaking into the England squad earlier this season.
The 24-year-old’s contract with the French side expires at the end of the season and there has been no progress with regards to a fresh deal.
And, according to The Sun, United are planning a swoop for Gomes on a free transfer, with the midfielder viewed as one of their major targets for next summer.Â
Gomes’ contract expires at the end of the season, meaning that he can discuss pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs from January, and United believe they can lure him back with the promise of becoming Casemiro’s long-term replacement in midfield. That he would cost nothing is, of course, likely to be a motivating factor, and Gomes has previously admitted he would find it “difficult” to say no to a return.
Gomes has now informed Lille that he has no intentions to stay with the French side beyond 2025. Manchester United could get back their former academy star on a free transfer.
