Man United Receive Timeframe to Make Appeal against Grimsby
Manchester United Given Five Days to Appeal Carabao Cup Decision
Manchester United have been presented with a five-day window to decide if they will appeal the English Football League’s (EFL) ruling on Grimsby Town’s Carabao Cup victory.
The League Two side was fined £20,000, with half suspended, after it was discovered they fielded an ineligible player, Clarke Oduor, in their stunning penalty shootout victory over the Premier League giants.
The controversy arose following the August 27th match, which Grimsby won after a 2-2 draw in normal time. It was later revealed that Oduor, a loan signing from Bradford City, had been registered one minute and 59 seconds after the noon deadline set by the competition rules.
Grimsby Town’s swift action in self-reporting the breach and cooperating with the EFL has been a key factor in the board’s decision to issue a fine rather than a more severe punishment, such as expulsion from the tournament.
The EFL released a statement noting that the club’s non-compliance was “not deliberate with no intention to deceive or mislead,” and that the fine was consistent with precedents set in similar cases.
While the EFL’s decision has allowed Grimsby to progress to the next round, it has sparked debate among Manchester United fans, with some arguing that the club should be reinstated in the competition. However, reports suggest that the Red Devils are not currently planning to appeal the decision, seemingly accepting the outcome and considering the matter closed.
Under EFL rules, Manchester United have until next Monday to make a final decision, but for now, it appears Grimsby Town will continue their Carabao Cup journey, while United’s early exit from the tournament remains in place.
