Man United to Battle City for Sporting CP Midfielder

Manchester Derby Looms for Sporting’s Midfield Gem Morten Hjulmand

A fierce cross-city rivalry is set to ignite in the summer transfer window, with Manchester United and Manchester City reportedly preparing to battle for the signature of Sporting CP’s influential midfielder, Morten Hjulmand. Portuguese outlet A Bola is reporting the strong interest from both Premier League giants in the Danish international.

Hjulmand, 25, has become one of Europe’s most coveted defensive midfielders since his €18 million move to Sporting in the summer of 2023.

He has exceeded all expectations at the Portuguese club, becoming a pivotal figure and even being handed the captain’s armband in just his second season.

His strong performances, including a memorable long-range goal against England at Euro 2024, have fueled speculation of a move to a top European league.

Manchester United’s interest in Hjulmand is particularly strong, with new manager Ruben Amorim keen to reunite with his former captain.

Amorim, who oversaw Hjulmand’s rise to prominence at Sporting, is understood to view the Dane as a key component in his plans to reshape the Old Trafford midfield.

The prospect of Hjulmand pulling the strings alongside Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo is an exciting one for United fans, offering a blend of tactical intelligence, physicality, and leadership that has sometimes been lacking.

However, Manchester City have now entered the fray, adding another layer of intrigue to the transfer saga. Pep Guardiola’s side are known for their meticulous recruitment and ability to attract top talent, and their interest signals Hjulmand’s undeniable quality.

Hugo Viana, who came through Sporting’s youth system and served as their sporting director when Hjulmand was signed, could be a key factor in their pursuit.

Sporting, however, are in a strong negotiating position. Hjulmand is under contract until June 2028, and his deal includes an €80 million (£69.4 million) release clause.

The Portuguese champions, who are already facing the likely departure of striker Viktor Gyokeres, are reportedly adamant that they will not let Hjulmand leave for anything less than this figure.
