A fierce cross-city rivalry is set to ignite in the summer transfer window, with Manchester United and Manchester City reportedly preparing to battle for the signature of Sporting CP’s influential midfielder, Morten Hjulmand. Portuguese outlet A Bola is reporting the strong interest from both Premier League giants in the Danish international.
Hjulmand, 25, has become one of Europe’s most coveted defensive midfielders since his €18 million move to Sporting in the summer of 2023.
He has exceeded all expectations at the Portuguese club, becoming a pivotal figure and even being handed the captain’s armband in just his second season.

Manchester United’s interest in Hjulmand is particularly strong, with new manager Ruben Amorim keen to reunite with his former captain.
Amorim, who oversaw Hjulmand’s rise to prominence at Sporting, is understood to view the Dane as a key component in his plans to reshape the Old Trafford midfield.
The prospect of Hjulmand pulling the strings alongside Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo is an exciting one for United fans, offering a blend of tactical intelligence, physicality, and leadership that has sometimes been lacking.
