Sporting Lisbon Makes Fresh Ridiculous Rúben Amorim’s Demands

Manchester United closely watched Sporting Lisbon’s 3-1 victory over Nacional on Tuesday night, with many believing it could be Ruben Amorim’s farewell match.

Amorim has agreed to join United and Sporting released a statement confirming that there is an agreement for his €10million (£8.3million) release clause to be paid.

The 39-year-old addressed questions about joining United during his post-match press conference on Tuesday evening, but kept his cards close to his chest, stating that there was “nothing to say… yet.”

United sent officials to Portugal to finalize the deal, and there was increasing optimism that Amorim would manage the team against Chelsea for the Premier League match on Sunday afternoon.

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, in addition to the €10m termination clause, valid for top clubs in Europe, Sporting want an extra €5m so that the rest of the coaching staff can terminate their contracts.

An additional fee has been requested by the Portuguese champions to facilitate an immediate transfer to Manchester. United are reluctant to match the 30-day notice period fee.

The report indicates that some Sporting players confronted their coach about his upcoming departure. The news left them surprised and upset, reflecting how highly they regarded him as a coach.

Amorim received a warm reception from Sporting fans in what might have been his final match last night. One supporter appeared on Portuguese TV, visibly emotional, as he reacted to the news.
