Real Betis Proposes Creative Co-Ownership Deal for Antony to Manchester United
Real Betis are making a determined push to secure the services of Brazilian winger Antony, who impressed during a loan spell at the club in the latter half of the 2024-25 season.
In a novel approach to overcome Manchester United’s valuation, Betis have reportedly tabled a co-ownership proposal, offering an initial €20 million while requesting that United retain a significant percentage, potentially 50%, of any future transfer fee.
The creative offer, reported by Sport Witness and other Spanish outlets, comes as Betis seeks to bridge the financial gap with Manchester United, who are understood to be seeking a much higher outright fee for the player they signed for approximately €95 million (£86 million) in 2022.
Antony’s stint at Old Trafford has been challenging, but his time in Seville saw a resurgence in form, contributing to Betis’s strong performance and helping them reach the Europa Conference League final.
Co-ownership, while less common in top European leagues now (having been abolished in Italy but still prevalent in South America), involves two clubs jointly owning a player’s contract.
In this proposed scenario, Betis would acquire a percentage of Antony’s economic rights for the initial €20 million, allowing them to register him for play.
Manchester United, in turn, would benefit from a substantial sell-on clause, ensuring they receive a significant portion of any future transfer fee if Antony’s value increases and he is sold to another club.
This “Abde formula,” as it’s been dubbed in some Spanish reports, refers to a similar transfer strategy Betis employed previously.
The idea is to reduce the upfront cost for Betis, who are operating under tighter financial constraints, while providing Manchester United with a pathway to recoup a larger sum in the long run, should Antony continue to flourish.
Reports suggest that discussions between Betis CEO Ramón Alarcón and sporting director Manu Fajardo and Manchester United representatives have been ongoing.
There is reportedly a growing sense of optimism that an understanding can be reached between the two clubs.
Antony himself has publicly expressed his desire to remain at Real Betis, reportedly willing to take a pay cut to facilitate the move, having found a new lease of life under manager Manuel Pellegrini.
