Diego Leon’s Man Utd Proposed Shirt Number

The arrival of promising Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon at Manchester United has generated considerable excitement, but one lingering question remains for fans: what shirt number will the 18-year-old wear for the Red Devils?

As pre-season training intensifies and the club prepares for its first friendly against Leeds on July 19th, speculation is rife regarding Leon’s official squad number.

While new signing Matheus Cunha has already been confirmed as Manchester United’s new No. 10, Leon was notably pictured in a numberless training kit during his first sessions at Carrington.

This delay in announcement suggests that the club may be waiting to finalize other squad number decisions before officially assigning Leon his jersey.

One prominent theory is that Leon has his eye on the No. 37, the number he proudly wore during his breakthrough at his former club, Cerro Porteño.

However, this shirt is currently occupied by academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo. Should Mainoo be assigned a new number for the upcoming season – with the No. 14, now vacant after Christian Eriksen’s departure, being a potential option for the midfielder – it could pave the way for Leon to claim his preferred digit.

Beyond the No. 37, several other numbers are currently available within the Manchester United squad.

With recent changes seeing Diogo Dalot switch to the iconic No. 2 and various players departing or moving on, there are options galore for Leon.

Numbers between 27 and 35 are all currently open, offering a range of choices should his preferred 37 not become available.

Regardless of the number on his back, Leon has already made a positive impression at Carrington.

Reports from club insiders suggest that his “great intensity” on the training pitch has left manager Ruben Amorim with a beaming smile, a clear indication that the young defender is eager to make his mark.
