Ten Hag was handed a contract extension in July but only after United had considered alternatives following a season in which they finished a lowly eighth in the Premier League and won the FA cup against defending Premier League champions City.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Manchester United board are set to have an internal review meeting to determine Ten Hag’s future at the club.

The Red Devils’ directors have contacted the entourages of other managers to facilitate an appointment in the event of the Dutchman’s departure in the coming days. New owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is expected to take the final call on the managerial dilemma.

The Red Devils offered Ten Hag a two-year-long extension on his contract and promised to help him succeed at Old Trafford with big signings and support. Ineos earlier promised to back Ten Hag for one full season to assess his tenure under their leadership and scrutiny.

Despite speculation, Ineos currently aims to stand by their pledge regarding Ten Hag’s future, but the situation remains fluid, with an ultimate decision forthcoming.
