Manchester United’s Injury Crisis: Teenagers Called Up to Face Tottenham
Manchester United’s injury woes have reached crisis point, with several teenagers set to feature against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
The Red Devils have been hit by a spate of injuries, with midfielders Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte, and Toby Collyer all ruled out of the Spurs game.
The biggest blow, however, is the loss of Amad Diallo, who is set to miss the rest of the season with ankle ligament damage.
The 22-year-old’s injury has left manager Ruben Amorim with a significant headache, and he has been forced to call up several academy players to bolster his squad.
Five teenagers – Chido Obi, Jack Fletcher, Sekou Kone, James Scanlon, and Jack Moorhouse – have traveled to London with the first team, and Amorim will make a final decision on his 20-man matchday squad later today.
Obi, a 17-year-old sensation who joined United from Arsenal in October, has been in impressive form for the academy team, scoring a hat-trick in the FA Youth Cup win over Chelsea in midweek.
Amorim was keen to play down expectations, but admitted that Obi is one of the young players who has been called up to train with the first team.
January signing Patrick Dorgu is also in line for a first Premier League start, as Amorim looks to shore up his depleted squad.
Lisandro Martinez has undergone successful knee surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament injury, but Jonny Evans, Luke Shaw, and Mason Mount remain sidelined.
With United’s injury crisis showing no signs of abating, Amorim will be hoping that his young players can rise to the challenge and help the team secure a much-needed win against Tottenham.
