Pep Guardiola Responds To Wayne Rooney’s Comment

Wayne Rooney has said he would jump at the chance to be Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City.

The former England captain has been out of job since being sacked as Birmingham City manager last month and insists he’d happily chuck his Manchester United allegiances aside to go and sit under Guardiola’s learning tree.

In an interview on the Stick To Football podcast, Rooney said Mikel Arteta’s performance with Arsenal, after three years as Guardiola’s No. 2, demonstrates Pep’s genius and his ability to teach others around him.

“If Pep Guardiola comes in and asks me to be his assistant, I’d walk there,” the 38-year-old said. “You see what Arteta is doing now and I strongly believe a lot of that is from learning what Guardiola was doing and so it depends on what the situation is.”

Rooney went on to describe Man City as “the best team in the country”, citing the fact they work harder than anyone else.

Pep Guardiola is flattered that Rooney spoke so highly of him after achieving so much during his playing days.

Asked about Rooney’s comments, Guardiola, 53, said: “I don’t know where he lives. It’s Cheshire? So it’s close.”He can come any time, he’s more than welcome.”

He said: “For our city, of course he’s important, but he is a Red Devil, he is United but of course it’s nice for all of us.

“Wayne Rooney has been one of the greatest in this country of all time, so if he makes compliments for all of us, it’s nice.
