Reasons Old Trafford Will Not Host Euro2028 Matches

Old Trafford

Matches for the UEFA EURO2028 tournament will be held at five different Premier League venues. These include the Etihad Stadium (home of Manchester City), Everton Stadium (home of Everton), St James’ Park (home of Newcastle United), Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (home of Tottenham Hotspur), and Villa Park (home of Aston Villa).

However, one notable absence from the list is Old Trafford, the iconic home of Manchester United. The decision has been made that Old Trafford will not be used as a venue for any EURO2028 matches.

The decision to exclude Old Trafford from the tournament’s hosting duties was a result of discussions between Manchester United and the Football Association (FA). Although originally considered during the preliminary bid, it was deemed that Old Trafford’s availability could not be guaranteed due to potential redevelopment plans for the stadium.

Manchester United, in a released statement, expressed their disappointment at being unable to host UEFA EURO2028 matches at Old Trafford. They emphasized their commitment to preserving the stadium’s status as the largest and most iconic football ground in England, and expressed their hopes for future opportunities to host international matches and major events at their beloved “Theatre of Dreams.”

As for the tournament itself, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland have been awarded the honor of hosting EURO2028. Ten stadiums have been identified as the venues for the competition.
