Reasons Revealed: Tottenham Sues Sir Jim Ratcliffe
Tottenham Hotspur have initiated High Court proceedings against INEOS Automotive, a company owned by Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, over the early termination of a significant sponsorship agreement.
The legal action centers on a dispute surrounding a five-year deal for the INEOS Grenadier to be Tottenham’s official 4×4 vehicle partner, a partnership that INEOS has reportedly ended three years ahead of schedule.
The deal, struck in 2022, saw INEOS Grenadier’s branding prominently featured at Tottenham’s home matches. However, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s acquisition of a minority stake in Manchester United in December 2023, the optics of an INEOS company sponsoring a direct Premier League rival seemingly became untenable.
INEOS Automotive has confirmed exercising a “contractual right to terminate” their partnership agreement, a right they claim was activated in December 2024.
Tottenham Hotspur, however, has declined to comment on the ongoing legal matter, suggesting a disagreement over the terms or validity of this termination right.
Court records show Spurs filed a commercial claim at the High Court on Thursday, though specific details of the documents are not yet publicly available.
This isn’t the first time INEOS has faced legal challenges over sponsorship agreements. In March 2025, it was announced that INEOS had reached a settlement with New Zealand Rugby after the All Blacks launched legal proceedings.
The rugby federation had alleged that INEOS failed to pay the first installment of a 2025 sponsorship sum due under a six-year agreement, which INEOS had also sought to exit early, citing “trading conditions for our European businesses have been severely impacted by high energy costs and extreme carbon taxes.”
